The year was 1999 — I was in England for a year of my medical schooling, and I sought to visit my amazing Newcastle cousins. During a brief break I managed a quick trip to Aafrine’s family home. The day I arrived, I was told by my Uncle and Auntie (Aafrine’s parents), that we were to attend a dinner party later that evening. Thank goodness I brought the proper clothes! Later that evening, Aafrine, her parents, and I went to the party. It was a big affair, with lots of Desi Aunties and Uncles chatting up a storm, and kids running around everywhere. I was the only one with an American accent, but it didn’t matter because no one heard it. I didn’t know anyone and spent the beginning of the evening alone, by the food table (my favorite spot at parties :). A lot of time went by, and I was quite bored, to say the least. As the food table and I were getting properly acquainted, Aafrine, my lovely first cousin who I’ve known since childhood, spotted me alone by the table while everyone else was enjoying themselves. She came and sat next to me, and we spent the rest of the event together making silent fun of party goers and reminiscing on old memories. She didn’t leave my side until it was time to leave. Aafrine turned that boring party into a fun event, and I never forgot her thoughtfulness. Here is a photo from that night in 1999!
